Types of Nursing Jobs Available
Hospital Nurse: This area
employs the largest number of nurses. Nurses are
assigned to the following locations: Emergency Room, Surgical Unit, Pediatric
Unit, Intensive Care Unit, Maternity Unit, Burn Unit, and many others. In these
settings registered nurses will supervise practical nurses and nursing
assistants.
Office Nurse: A nursing working in a physician's office may perform the
following tasks on the job: Wound Care Dressing, Maintaining
Records, Examinations, Giving injections and Meds.
Compensation for the job can come directly from the physician's practice or the
physician’s hospital affiliation.
Private Duty Nurse: This job requires a nurse to work independently in many
different scenarios. Private duty nurses often supervise nursing assistants.
A private duty nurse is delivering physician-prescribed services to patients who have
decreased mobility and require treatment at home.
Public Health Nurse: Nurses that work in schools, government agencies. and
retirement centers are referred to as public health nurses. Health education is
a key aspect of nursing intervention within these populations. Blood pressure
testing and immunizations are checked on a regular basis in this type of job.
Disease prevention is also a primary focus of public health nurses.
Nursing Home Nurse: Nursing homes often have high number of practical nurses
relative to registered nurse ratio. Nurses are responsible for patient
treatment plans with a wide variety of medical conditions. Residents are often
deconditioned and require rehabilitation or reconditioning care. Nursing jobs in
this field of nursing can be very challenging, but also rewarding.
Health or Industrial Nurse: These types of nurses offer work related treatment
for a variety of minor injuries. This also includes work environment assessment
and health related counseling. Safety concerns are top priority in this field of
nursing.
